About EPUB
EPUB (Electronic Publication) was standardized in 2007 by the International Digital Publishing Forum and published as an ISO standard in version 3.3. It is the open standard format for e-books and is based on HTML, CSS, and ZIP packaging, enabling dynamic text reflow based on screen size and reading device. EPUB supports reflow layout, embedded fonts, images, audio, video, and JavaScript interactivity for enhanced e-books. The format is supported by most e-readers except Amazon Kindle. Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, and Thalia use EPUB as their standard format. Amazon automatically converts uploaded EPUBs to its proprietary AZW3 or KFX formats. EPUB 3 added support for media overlays synchronizing text and audio, and MathML for mathematical formulas. EPUB files can be validated for standards compliance using the EPUBCheck tool. For self-publishers, EPUB is the most important format alongside PDF since it provides the broadest access to e-reader platforms.
About AZW3
AZW3 (Kindle Format 8, KF8) was introduced by Amazon in 2011 as the successor to MOBI and offers significantly expanded layout capabilities for e-books on Kindle devices. AZW3 supports CSS styling, embedded fonts, fixed layouts for comics and childrens books, HTML5 and CSS3 features, and extended Unicode support for international character sets. The format is a hybrid of MOBI structure for base text and an additional KF8 section for advanced formatting and layout features. AZW3 is supported by Kindle Fire, Kindle Paperwhite, and newer Kindle devices but not older models like Kindle 1 through 4. Amazon automatically converts uploaded EPUBs to AZW3 for Kindle distribution. The newer KFX format offers even better typography with extended ligatures and hyphenation but is not supported by all Kindle devices. For non-Kindle devices, converting to EPUB is required since AZW3 is an Amazon proprietary format without an open specification.
Why convert AZW3 → EPUB?
AZW3 (KF8/Kindle Format 8) is Amazon's proprietary e-book format for Kindle Fire and newer Kindle devices. It supports CSS layouts, embedded fonts, and advanced formatting, but is practically unusable outside the Kindle ecosystem. No other e-reader can directly open AZW3. Converting to EPUB (usually EPUB) makes the e-book available on all platforms — Kobo, Tolino, Onyx Boox, Apple Books, Google Play Books, and all other e-reader apps. EPUB is the open e-book standard with flexible layout for all e-readers except older Kindle devices.
