About MP4

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) was standardized in 2001 as ISO 14496-14 and is the most widely used container format for video and audio worldwide. Based on Apple QuickTime format (MOV), MP4 can hold various codecs, most commonly H.264/AVC or H.265/HEVC for video and AAC for audio. The format supports streaming via HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) and Dynamic Adaptive Streaming (DASH), subtitles, chapters, metadata, and multiple audio and video tracks. MP4 is the standard format for YouTube, Vimeo, Netflix, and social media platforms. The broad codec support and compatibility with virtually every device and browser make MP4 the safe choice for video distribution. MP4 files can also contain pure audio (M4A) or images. The ISO Base Media File Format standard on which MP4 is based is also the foundation for 3GP, HEIF, and other container formats.

About FLV

FLV (Flash Video) was developed in 2002 by Macromedia - later Adobe - as the video format for Adobe Flash Player and dominated web video until around 2015. YouTube used FLV as its standard format from 2005 to 2010 before switching to MP4 and WebM. FLV supports Sorenson Spark, VP6, and H.264 as video codecs and MP3 and AAC as audio codecs. The format enabled video streaming in the browser for the first time without additional plugins and was essential for the rise of YouTube, Vimeo, and other video platforms. With the end of Flash Player in 2020, FLV lost all relevance - modern browsers cannot play FLV at all. Millions of older FLV files still exist and must be converted to MP4 for playback on modern devices and browsers. FLV was the format that initiated the era of web video and laid the groundwork for the current video platform landscape.

Why convert FLV → MP4?

FLV (Flash Video) was the standard web video format of the 2000s, but Adobe permanently discontinued Flash in 2020. Modern browsers can't play FLV, and Flash players are a security risk. Converting to MP4 (MP4) is absolutely required to make Flash videos usable on modern platforms. Without conversion, FLV files are practically unusable. MP4 rescues older video content from digital oblivion. MP4 is the standard video format for web and mobile with H.264/H.265 video and AAC audio — universally compatible.
