About MP4
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) was standardized in 2001 as ISO 14496-14 and is the most widely used container format for video and audio worldwide. Based on Apple QuickTime format (MOV), MP4 can hold various codecs, most commonly H.264/AVC or H.265/HEVC for video and AAC for audio. The format supports streaming via HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) and Dynamic Adaptive Streaming (DASH), subtitles, chapters, metadata, and multiple audio and video tracks. MP4 is the standard format for YouTube, Vimeo, Netflix, and social media platforms. The broad codec support and compatibility with virtually every device and browser make MP4 the safe choice for video distribution. MP4 files can also contain pure audio (M4A) or images. The ISO Base Media File Format standard on which MP4 is based is also the foundation for 3GP, HEIF, and other container formats.
About WMV
WMV (Windows Media Video) was developed by Microsoft in 2003 as part of the Windows Media platform and uses VC-1 (SMPTE 421M) as its video codec. WMV was Microsoft response to RealVideo and was intended to become the dominant streaming format for Windows systems. The format never achieved the adoption of MP4 or FLV but was used in Windows Media Player and older Windows systems. WMV files are stored in an ASF container that supports DRM copy protection through Microsoft PlayReady. Image quality at low bitrates was acceptable for streaming applications of the 2000s era. WMV was also supported on HD-DVD and Blu-ray as an optional format. Today, WMV is obsolete - modern browsers and devices do not support it natively. Converting to MP4 is required to play WMV files on current systems. WMV exemplified Microsoft strategy of using proprietary formats as a competitive advantage in the media landscape.
Why convert WMV → MP4?
WMV (Windows Media Video) is a proprietary Microsoft format with poor compatibility outside Windows. Mac and Linux systems, mobile devices, and most smart TVs can't play WMV natively. MP4 is the standard video format for web and mobile with H.264/H.265 video and AAC audio — universally compatible.
