About MOBI

MOBI was developed in 2000 by Mobipocket - a French company acquired by Amazon in 2005 - as an e-book format for mobile devices and PDA systems. MOBI is based on the PalmDOC format with HTML markup and supports DRM copy protection for copyrighted content. The format was the standard for Amazon Kindle devices until 2011, when Amazon introduced AZW3 (KF8) as its successor with significantly expanded layout capabilities. MOBI files can be read on older Kindle devices and support basic formatting like bold and italic, but not advanced CSS layouts or embedded fonts. Since 2022, Amazon no longer accepts new MOBI files for Send-to-Kindle email delivery and recommends EPUB as the upload format. MOBI remains relevant for owners of older Kindle devices but is a declining format with no further development. Converting to EPUB is the recommended path for future-oriented e-book archiving. Calibre can reliably convert MOBI files to other formats.

About EPUB

EPUB (Electronic Publication) was standardized in 2007 by the International Digital Publishing Forum and published as an ISO standard in version 3.3. It is the open standard format for e-books and is based on HTML, CSS, and ZIP packaging, enabling dynamic text reflow based on screen size and reading device. EPUB supports reflow layout, embedded fonts, images, audio, video, and JavaScript interactivity for enhanced e-books. The format is supported by most e-readers except Amazon Kindle. Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, and Thalia use EPUB as their standard format. Amazon automatically converts uploaded EPUBs to its proprietary AZW3 or KFX formats. EPUB 3 added support for media overlays synchronizing text and audio, and MathML for mathematical formulas. EPUB files can be validated for standards compliance using the EPUBCheck tool. For self-publishers, EPUB is the most important format alongside PDF since it provides the broadest access to e-reader platforms.

Why convert EPUB → MOBI?

EPUB is the open e-book standard (ISO/IEC TS 30135) with flexible reflow layout that adapts to any screen size. It's supported by most e-readers — with the major exception of Amazon Kindle devices, which don't natively read EPUB (Kindle apps can convert EPUB since 2022). Converting to MOBI enables use on all e-readers, in all apps, and on all platforms — regardless of manufacturer. MOBI is especially important for Kindle users who want to read EPUB books. MOBI is an older Kindle format with limited formatting, replaced by KFX/AZW3 on newer Kindle devices.
