Image Converter
Every image converter on wandlio in one place – from iPhone photos in HEIC to PNG screenshots and Photoshop files. The list is organised by the format you want to end up with, so start with your target and then pick the format you already have.
Most image conversions happen right in your browser with no upload. A few formats, such as HEIC, TIFF and RAW, plus text recognition (OCR) are handled by our servers in Germany. Each pair below tells you which applies.
Image converters by target format
“Browser” means the conversion runs in your browser with no upload – your file stays on your device. “Server” means the file is sent over an encrypted connection (HTTPS) to our servers in Germany and deleted right after conversion.
Convert to JPG
JPEG is the most widely used format for photos, which makes it the safest choice for sharing and uploading. It has no transparency, so in-browser conversions fill see-through areas with white. The first entry accepts several source formats at once.

Convert to PNG
PNG is lossless and keeps full transparency – ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with text. When wandlio renders an SVG, it uses a white background and caps the longest side at 2048 pixels.

Convert to WebP
WebP was built for the web. Google reports that lossy WebP images are 25–34 % smaller than comparable JPEGs, and transparency is still supported.

Convert to AVIF
AVIF is based on the AV1 video codec, and MDN describes its lossy compression as excellent compared to JPG and PNG. Browser support starts with Chrome 85, Edge 121, Firefox 93 and Safari 16.1.

Convert to GIF
A GIF can show at most 256 colours, and each pixel is either fully transparent or fully opaque. Animated GIFs are made from video here: MP4 and WebM clips become an animation at 12 frames per second, 480 pixels wide.

Convert to TIFF, ICO or BMP
You rarely need these on the web; they serve specific software. TIFF suits print and image editing, ICO is for app icons and classic favicons, and BMP only makes sense when a program explicitly asks for it. The ICO file holds six sizes from 16 to 256 pixels.

Text recognition and PDF
OCR pulls the text out of photos and scans, and the searchable PDF lets you find it again later. You will also find the routes from images to PDF – several JPG or PNG files become one document with an A4 page per image – and from PDF back to JPG, with every page saved as its own image.

Which format should you use?
Usually one question settles it: do you need transparency, animation, or simply a file that opens anywhere?
| If you want to … | Good choice | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| send or upload a photo | JPG | lossy and without transparency, but supported by every major browser |
| save a screenshot, logo or graphic with transparency | PNG | lossless with an alpha channel; for photos, JPG is usually the better fit |
| publish images on a website | WebP or AVIF | much smaller files than JPG and PNG; add a fallback for older browsers |
| keep an animation | animated WebP or GIF | image-to-image conversions keep a single frame; animated GIFs are created from video here |
| print, scan or archive | TIFF or PNG | apart from Safari, browsers don't display TIFF |
| make an icon for an app or website | PNG, ICO or SVG | ICO files are limited to 256 × 256 pixels |
| share an iPhone photo with others | JPG | Chrome, Edge and Firefox can't display HEIC |
The main image formats at a glance
- JPG (JPEG)
- The most widely used lossy format for photos; no transparency. In the browser, wandlio saves JPG at a quality setting of 0.92 on a 0–1 scale and keeps the pixel dimensions.
- PNG
- Lossless, with full alpha transparency and optional indexed colour like GIF. MDN recommends it when precise reproduction or transparency matters.
- WebP
- Stores images lossy or lossless and supports transparency and animation. According to Google, lossless WebP files are on average 26 % smaller than PNGs.
- AVIF
- The Alliance for Open Media's image format, built on AV1: royalty-free, with transparency, HDR and 8-, 10- or 12-bit colour.
- HEIC (HEIF)
- With the camera set to “High Efficiency”, iPhones save photos as HEIC; “Most Compatible” switches to JPEG. Among the major browsers, only Safari displays HEIC.
- GIF
- The classic format for simple animations, limited to a palette of 256 colours – a poor fit for photos.
- TIFF
- Used for print, scans and image editing; one file can hold several pages. Converting from or to TIFF runs on our servers.
- PSD
- Photoshop's layered document format. In the browser, wandlio reads the flattened image stored in the file; individual layers are not carried over.
- SVG
- Vector graphics for logos, icons and diagrams that stay sharp at any size. Where SVG isn't accepted, a PNG or JPG copy helps.
In your browser or on our servers?
In the browser, wandlio uses your browser's Canvas API, the ag-psd library for Photoshop files and the pdf.js library for PDF to JPG; AVIF – and WebP in Safari – is encoded by a WebAssembly encoder loaded on demand. Portrait photos keep the orientation stored in their EXIF data. You can pick several files at once; your browser then downloads the results one after another.
Animated GIF and WebP files turn into a still image along the way: when decoding, the browser only hands over the default or first frame of an animation.
For HEIC, TIFF, RAW and TGA and for text recognition, your file travels over HTTPS to our servers in Germany and is deleted right after conversion.
